Legend has it that Emperor Qianlong said to an old porcelain worker during his private visit to Jingdezhen, "Unfortunately, there are no moving bottles here. After listening to this, the old porcelain worker pondered deeply and was inspired by the lantern, finally creating a type of porcelain bottle that can rotate - the hollow heart rotating bottle.

Born: Designed by Tang Ying and determined by Emperor Qianlong

During the Qianlong period of the Qing Dynasty, a type of exquisite display porcelain - hollowed out revolving heart vases appeared. As the name suggests, a rotating bottle is a bottle that can rotate at its center. It consists of two bottles, the outer bottle and the inner bottle, placed together. The outer bottle adopts hollowing and carving techniques, carving various patterns and patterns on the porcelain body, which can perspective the inside of the bottle; The inner bottle is decorated with exquisite patterns and can rotate. When rotating the inner bottle, people can see the rotating image on the inner bottle through the hollow part of the outer bottle, as if the image can move, which is very exquisite and interesting.

The development of Chinese porcelain making technology during the Qianlong period was extremely complete, reaching the point where "any color or shape can be fired". Shao Zhemin wrote in his book "Supplementary Research on the Origin and Development of Ancient and Modern Porcelain": "Qing porcelain flourished during the Qianlong period, and the variety of porcelain styles is unparalleled. Emperor Qianlong was a legendary figure in the history of the History of the Qing dynasty. He was 89 years old and reigned for 60 years. His reign was the most prosperous period of the Qing Dynasty. He not only established outstanding achievements in politics and military affairs, but also had a great love for literature and art, and a high appreciation for handicrafts. During the Qianlong period, a large number of extremely exquisite handicrafts emerged, whether it was gold and silver, jade, or porcelain, all of which had the characteristic of "novelty and delicacy". It was against this backdrop that the pinnacle of the uncanny craftsmanship of the hollow heart vase emerged.

According to expert research, the Heart Turning Bottle was a unique work presented to the emperor by Tang Ying, the kiln governor of the early Qianlong period, and had never been seen before. Due to the complexity of the design and the high cost of labor and materials, Tang Ying dared not hastily fire. He requested the emperor to "teach and correct" these exquisite works. After Emperor Qianlong saw them, he probably felt that the craftsmanship was too complex and the cost was too high, and he was reluctant to make more. In his memorial, he replied: "There is no need to burn as much as usual porcelain, and later more than ten pieces will be added according to the section." Qing Dynasty literature records the eighth, eleventh, twelfth, eighteenth, and twenty-second years of Qianlong, The Imperial Kiln Factory once fired several rotating heart bottles, with a total of only a few dozen pieces, and later became a masterpiece.

Legend: Pink Hollow Heart Flask

A pink hollow heart shaped vase with a height of 41.5 centimeters, a caliber of 12.2 centimeters, and a bottom diameter of 21 centimeters. The bottom features a six character blue and white seal script "Made in the Qianlong reign of the Qing Dynasty". Twist the mouth, tie the neck, slip the shoulders, gradually converge below the shoulders, and connect the circular feet below. The overall shape is symmetrical, the color is full, the craftsmanship is exquisite, and the style is elegant and generous, which is quite popular among people. The bottle is divided into two parts: the inner and outer, which are connected by the bottleneck. The bottom of the inner bottle is connected to the inner part of the outer bottle. The outer bottle is painted in pink, and the carp pattern is lifelike. The hollowed out water ripple carving can be described as exquisite and ingenious.

The opening and edges of the bottle mouth and abdomen are decorated with gold color, which has a typical royal style.

Auspicious patterns are the main content of ceramic decoration, and Qing Dynasty porcelain has the era characteristic of "meaning must be intentional, meaning must be auspicious". This vase not only has a strong artistic atmosphere and exquisite craftsmanship, but also carries a very auspicious meaning. The carp painted on the bottle body symbolizes "surplus every year" and "fish leaping over the gate of the dragon", complementing the red "auspicious" character painted on the neck, creating a luxurious and atmospheric bottle with a sense of "peace and security". This piece is painted with blue and white on the inside and pink on the outside, using various techniques such as gold painting, hollowing out, heart turning, relief, and shallow carving. It is extremely luxurious and breathtaking, and belongs to the pinnacle of the Qing Dynasty's three generations of porcelain.

Charm: How to treat him as the turning of the autumn wave

In Romance of the Western Chamber, Zhang Sheng describes Yingying's charm with "how to make his eyes turn when he is dying". The charm of the Heart Turning Bottle also lies in this "turn". This turn is the beauty of breaking stillness into motion. The beauty of porcelain has always been static, and the emergence of the rotating heart bottle breaks the static beauty of traditional porcelain. Through rotation, the angle constantly changes, producing wonderful changes.

This turn is the beauty of furnace perfection. In order to rotate freely, each component size of the rotary bottle needs to be carefully calculated and repeatedly tested. If the temperature control is slightly improper, it will cause the entire device to deform and all previous efforts will be wasted.

The complexity and delicacy of its craftsmanship are simply breathtaking. Many aspects of its design and production are still difficult to achieve even with today's highly developed technology. It is difficult to imagine how people can accurately grasp its size and proportion when relying solely on manual manufacturing. This type of work that challenges the limits of porcelain making technology fully reflects the intelligence and exquisite skills of the craftsmen at that time, leaving an eternal legend for future generations.

This turn is a masterpiece of exquisite craftsmanship. In addition to its unique rotating structure, the craftsmen also depicted a hollowed out landscape barrier in pastel. The use of hollowing out to decorate and beautify objects was a common technique in Qing Dynasty porcelain, and during the Qianlong Dynasty, a large number of hollowing out techniques were applied to the revolving heart and neck bottles. Due to the high difficulty in making hollow objects, high technical requirements, and low yield, the hollow parts need to be carefully designed. The beautiful and exquisite hollow patterns on the objects fully reflect the high level of porcelain firing technology during this period. When it comes to the Qianlong official kiln, you can say that it lacks the character of Song porcelain and is not as grand as Yuan porcelain. However, when it comes to this heart-shaped vase, you have to praise the artists of that era. It is truly a timeless and ingenious work.
